Honda Hybrid & Electric vehicle (EV) Guide
Honda has worked on a variety of electrified models throughout the years, with more on the horizon. As the automotive landscape is continually electrified, and more technologies and acronyms come about, we prepared this guide to simplify the jargon and educate you on Honda's Hybrid and Electric Vehicle offerings.
Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV)
A hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) is the form you're probably most familiar with. HEVs combine gas engines with electric motors to generate electricity as you drive, so they never need to be plugged in.
Honda currently offers two HEV models in Canada.
The Accord is Honda's perennially best-selling midsize sedan due to its outstanding quality, fuel efficiency, packaging, and sophisticated driving dynamics.
he Insight has plenty to offer, from a sleek design, a spacious cabin with brilliant finishes, and available amenities like a power moonroof, heated front seats, and remote engine start. The Honda Insight is one serious contender in the HEV space.

Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV)
A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle operates in much the same way as an HEV. However, being able to plug in a PHEV to extend the electric-only driving range is what sets them apart.
When in EV mode they produce zero emissions, and when the battery becomes depleted or additional power is required, the vehicle's gas-powered engine automatically kicks in.
This gives you the best of both worlds. Having the ability to cover your commute with pure electric power means your fuel expenses can be significantly reduced while road trips are a breeze with the ability to switch to the engine when needed. There's zero range anxiety with a PHEV!
A greener future is here. With a 76km all-electric range and 547km of total combined range, the Clarity has your commute covered! It doesn't end there though! The Clarity is a great all-rounder with a spacious and premium interior with generous trunk space.
The tech doesn't end with the drivetrain either, the Clarity comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, multi-angle rearview cameras and a 180-watt audio system.
Honda takes safety seriously, and the Clarity comes with the Honda Sensing suite of safety technology. This features everything from Forward Collison Warnings and Lane-Keep Assist to Adaptive Cruise Control. The Collison Mitigation Braking System is so well regarded that it can even get you a 10% ICBC discount.
A big differentiator between PHEVs and HEVs is that you could save on a PHEV with both Federal and Provincial programs.
- In British Columbia, we have the CEVforBC program that gets you a rebate up to $1,500 on a PHEV.
- The Federal iZEV will get a rebate up to $5,000 back.
That's a total of up to $6,500 in savings! Incentives are also available for those wishing to lease or finance.
Battery Electric Vehicles
Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) are what people usually refer to these days when they're talking about EVs. These simply use a rechargeable battery for their power. They don't have fuel tanks of any kind, nor do they emit anything. Honda envisions some fully electric vehicles with a plan to electrify two-thirds of global automobile unit sales in 2030.
In Europe, Honda is taking pre-orders for the Honda e. This futuristic car is wrapped in a retro, minimalist design that enhances its efficiency. It's fully electric drivetrain, provides it with a responsive drive as all the torque is instantly available.
We'll be sure to keep you updated on all the developments in the Honda Hybrid and EV space.
